Why an ergonomic office chair is important
Office workers spend an average of 8 to 9 hours a day sitting. Without proper support and with a static posture, this quickly leads to back, neck, and shoulder pain.
An ergonomic office chair helps prevent these complaints. These chairs are specially designed to actively support your body and encourage natural movement. With adjustable features, the chair adapts completely to your body. This allows you to shift positions throughout the day, maintain healthy blood circulation, and stay more focused and energized until the end of the day. You work far more comfortably and significantly reduce the risk of strain-related injuries.
What is an ergonomic office chair?
An ergonomic office chair is a chair that you can adjust to suit your body and working style. It takes your individual needs into account. The chair can move with you and provides support where you need it.
The most important features of an ergonomic office chair:
- Adjustable seat height and seat depth
- Adjustable lumbar support and/or back height
- Ergonomic armrests that relieve pressure on the shoulders
- Dynamic mechanism that follows your movements
You can read more about the different movement mechanisms of an office chair in our blog “How does an office chair mechanism work?” to understand the different movement mechanisms and how to choose the right one.
What complaints does an ergonomic chair prevent?
A well-adjusted, ergonomic office chair helps your body stay balanced. This prevents:
- Lower back pain due to poor support
- Neck complaints due to a screen that is too low or a stiff sitting position
- Tired shoulders and arms due to a lack of support
- Tension in the legs due to incorrect seat height or depth
With the right settings, you can largely avoid these complaints—and work more productively.

How do I know which office chair to choose?

How should I adjust my office chair correctly?
You can only really benefit from the features of your office chair if it is properly adjusted and takes your body and working habits into account. Follow these 5 simple steps to make your (home) workplace ergonomic:

1. Seat height
Sit with your shoulders relaxed and your arms at a 90° angle on the desktop. Your feet should be flat on the floor, with your knees slightly lower than your hips.
Tip: Are your feet not touching the floor? Then check out our footrests .
2. Seat depth
Make sure your back is firmly against the backrest. Leave about three fingers' width of space between the front of the seat and the back of your knees.
3. Backrest / lumbar support
Position the lumbar support (or the contoured part of the backrest) just above your belt. This will give your lower back optimal support.
4. Armrests
Adjust the armrests so that your forearms rest horizontally, at the same height as the desktop. This will keep your shoulders relaxed.
5. Keyboard and screen position
Place the keyboard about 15 cm from the edge of the table. The screen should be centered, at eye level, and within arm's reach.
Tip: Don't have a height-adjustable screen? Then be sure to check out the monitor armsormonitor risers.
